What is QESCO?
QESCO, or Quetta Electric Supply Company, operates as a power distribution company in Balochistan, covering 43% of Pakistan’s area. It is responsible for supplying power to the entire Balochistan region except for the Lasbela district.
It started operating on July 1, 1998, following the corporate conversion and commercialization of WAPDA. The system is currently facing low voltage issues due to the long distances from generating sources and the availability of a single 220 KV source from Guddu. The peak demand for power is expected to reach 1659 MW by 2015 with an 8% annual growth rate. To address this issue, two 2×220 KV transmission lines have been approved for funding at a cost of Rs 5.437 and 5.089 billion, respectively. The safe drawl of power is currently 721 MW, but with the commissioning of these sources, an additional 600-700 MW of power will be made available for the province, thus alleviating the low voltage profile issues.
QESCO is transitioning from a public to a private organization, and measures are being taken to improve load management, including plans for rental powerhouses in Quetta, Sibi, and Khuzdar. These measures will help eliminate the low voltage profile problems that are prevalent throughout the region.
